      <image:title>About - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>I am Emma and with the support of my family I am starting this small farm business. After the birth of my first kiddo I quit my job in the city and we bought a farm. I wanted my kids to grow up knowing where their food comes from, the work that goes into all of it. I was missing a connection to the land and nature, but I also wanted something that would keep me grounded in the basics- what we need, not what we are told we should want. I also want to share this experience with folks, get things going on the farm and invite them out for a visit or to participate in some of the activities. I am a true believer in ‘it takes a village’ and I want to bring that back; building a community of folks who value small scale farm fresh goods, enjoy time in the country, and like to meet new people. That brings us to Comeback Hill. We went back and forth on the name, initially loving Lihlumela Breigh, Siswati and Scots Gaelic for hillside of new life or new growth (like a new shoot growing out of an old stump). That phrase has been my guide in envisioning and starting this business. I wanted to grow in a new way, I wanted to bring the land and apple orchard on the farm back, I want others to come here and feel as rejuvenated as I do, I wanted to live closely with the natural cycles of life and land. The vision is a small farm that works symbitoically- free range chickens, rotational grazing for sheep, bees and a wildflower pasture, an apple orchard and other native trees, small gardens to help support the animals and our family. Building a community around this farm, the food it provides, and sustainable practices. Eventually, I will offer memberships (like a CSA subscription) to the farm. Memberships will include a monthly delivery from the farm and an invitation to four annual events celebrating the season or transition of seasons. Deliveries might include eggs, seasonal produce, honey, wildflower bouquets, sheep’s milk and beeswax products. For now, as we are growing, I am selling eggs and any extra produce right from the farm. Keep an eye on our What’s Growing page (click the post for the most recent season) and our instagram @comebackhill. If you have any comments or suggestions, I’d love to hear them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is Toppie, or as I call him Topperella. He was our first head rooster. As the other roosters continued to grow, and Toppie became more aggressive (he was on the fattening up track for the dinner table), the other roosters exiled him. He had an injured leg, but we let him stick around to see if he might heal on his own. He did and is just beginning to re-integrate into the flock. He is now much less aggressive. Our polish hen seems to be Toppie's #1 lady.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Regenerative Agriculture - What is regenerative agriculture?</image:title>
<image:caption>We can help reverse the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon in soil. Using regenerative agriculture we are focusing on the ecosystem in the soil to maximize carbon sequestration. There are four basic practices of regenerative agriculture: Promote biodiversity No till- maintain a living root at all times Rotational grazing- avoid over grazing Compost- reduce the use of artificial fertilizers Comeback Hill practices all of these. We use cardboard piled with mulch and compost to create our garden beds. Our sheep are rotationally grazed to maintain our pastures, fertilize land to be used for future planting, and press down the grasses so we can more easily sow seeds. Our chickens help turn our compost, keep it rich with their waste as they forage. They reduce all of our food waste to near zero. We also rotationally graze the chickens after the sheep to apply and spread fertilizer, and keep weed and parasites under control. On our 13.5 acres we grow all sorts: apples, blueberries, wildflowers, vegetables, pumpkins, corn, and figure out how to grow it all together. Additionally, we keep bees to help pollinate everything.</image:caption>
